On September 9th, Hilton started their end of 2019 promotion. It’s not much different from their past offers. The Power Up promotion offers double base points on all stays between September 9, 2019 and January 5, 2020. If you use a Hilton Honors American Express card to pay for your stay, you’ll earn triple base points.
Normally, I’d say this promotion is rather bland and since Hilton points are only worth 1/2 cent each, it’s not much of an incentive to change any upcoming stays to a Hilton property.
Well, things change and now I’m really excited about this promotion.
The thing that’s changed is that I’m headed off on the second work trip of my career and once again the corporate travel agent has booked me into a Hilton brand hotel. This trip is for two weeks in New York and the room rate per night is over $200. Some simple math shows me how many points I’ll earn on this stay.
- Hilton base points – $200/night x 15 nights x 10 points = 30,000 Hilton points
- Power up promotion = double base points = 30,000 Hilton points
- Hilton Gold Member – 80% bonus base points = 24,000 Hilton points
While the idea of being away from home for 15 nights isn’t appealing, earning 84,000 Hilton Honors points for the stay is a small bright spot. Even if Hilton points are only worth 1/2 cent each, that’s still over $400 worth of hotel stays earned during this trip.
Just like I didn’t see the value of a hotel breakfast until my first work trip, I never saw the value of a simple double points promotion until work sent me away for two weeks on the company dime. I would love to earn triple points with this promo but the stay is being paid for by the corporate travel agent so there’s no chance of paying with a Hilton Honors AMEX card.
This promotion shows that even I can change my opinion depending on my situation. If this isn’t the ultimate case of Your Mileage May Vary, I don’t know what is.
