Pandora – The World of Avatar is a themed land located in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, the land takes up 12 acres of space in the area where Camp Minnie-Mickey had been, which is also the space originally earmarked for the Beastly Kingdom, a land based on mythological creatures, that was never built (BTW, the plan for Beastly Kingdom is why you’ll still see aspects in the park that include a dragon. A good example is on the backrest of many of the park’s benches).
Discussion about the land began in 2011 and construction began in 2014. The land opened in May 2017 and was estimated to have cost roughly $500 million to build.
Besides several places for shopping and dining, Pandora includes two major attractions: Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. Both attractions, particularly Flight of Passage, are solid hits with park guests, and even 4+ years after the land opened, can often see standby queues over two hours during busier times.
The land was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Lightstorm Entertainment, with Avatar producers James Cameron and Jon Landau acting as creative consultants and then-Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde serving as creative director.
