Hotel Review: La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham West Palm Beach Airport

by joeheg

I needed a room for a single night in West Palm Beach after going to see a concert at the Coral Sky Amphitheater, an open air facility on the grounds of the South Florida Fairgrounds. My requirements for the stay were that it needed to be close to the concert, inexpensive for a single night stay, and clean and safe enough for me to want to stay there.

I did some searches and several hotels fit the bill. After some back and forth reading reviews, I decided to go with this one:

La Quinta Inn & Suites West Palm Beach Airport
1910 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, West Palm Beach, FL

The hotel is located right off of I-95 and is only a 10 minute drive from Palm Beach Airport (PBI).

The best rate I was able to find for the room was through the PerkSpot portal access from my employer. This is the same way I get discounted theme park tickets. Since it was just me and it was only one night, I booked the cheapest room available, a queen bed city view room.

I arrived at the hotel not really knowing what to expect as there can be some variation in the quality of La Quinta hotels. This was was pretty much as I expected.

Check In/Lobby

The entrance to the lobby was under the awning. Pretty standard stuff here.

There was plenty of signage for the Wyndham Rewards program. When checking in, the front desk agent thanked me for being a member, even though I hadn’t stayed at a Wyndham or La Quinta for years. I was given a room on the fifth floor. I headed to the elevators located just down the hall.

I did notice the guests of  the hotel seemed to be split into two groups – fmilies who had children playing in a sports tournament or older guests traveling with their dogs. Makes sense because La Quinta does have some of the most pet friendly rules out there (here’s an easy way to find pet friendly hotels).

My room, number 501, was located at the far end of the hall.

Hotel Room

I walked into the room and entered a hallway. Just after the open area to hang clothes, there was the sink.

After that was the rest of the room (bed, desk, TV, fridge, microwave)

First thing I thought was “that’s not a queen size bed” Since La Quinta likes to market how they’re great for business travelers, how was the workspace in the room?

Well not much to speak of but there is a desk, chair and accessible plugs. Oh and free internet. I didn’t do a speed test to see how fast “Ultra Fast” actually it. I did work and I had no problems connecting from my room. Better than some places that charge for the privilege.

The toilet/tub/shower room was located next to the bed. The shampoo was Pantene 🙂

Everything was clean. The shower curtain kept water from getting on the floor and didn’t blow into the shower. There was no question how to work the shower controls.  Having the sink split from the toilet was a bid odd when washing your hands but it was only a few steps away.

From my room I did have a view of the control tower of Palm Beach Airport in the distance.

Amenities

The hotel does offer free breakfast but the room was totally full when I went down on Sunday morning so I didn’t get any pictures. It looked like the typical hotel free breakfast. There was a Starbucks outside the mall on the other side of I-95, less than five minutes away so my food needs were taken care of.

There was also a small pool that was always occupied by families during my stay so no pictures of that either.

Final Thoughts

How was my stay? Fine. The all in price for the room was $85. Not even worth trying to find a hotel where I could use a free night certificate. While the bed was small, it was comfortable. The internet connection worked.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive room for the night in West Palm Beach and want to be close to I-95, Palm Beach Airport or the Coral Sky Amphitheater, this no-nonsense La Quinta will fulfill that need.
