From Butthole Lane To Shaftesbury: Brothers Did An Epic “Rude Trip” Of England

by SharonKurheg

A while back I wrote a post about towns around the world that had names which, depending on your state of mind, could sound rather adult. Some infamous examples are Blue Balls, Bird-In-Hand and Intercourse, PA. Several people who read the post reached out to me and said they would love to do a trip and get pictures with all of the signs for these towns, like Beaverlick (it’s in Kentucky) and Dicktown (that one’s in New Jersey).

Welp, 2 brothers in the U.K. had the exact same idea, and instead of just wishing about it, decided to do an epic “rude trip” (you see what I did there?) of Britain.

Andy and Magnus Tait live in Scotland. In 2013 or so, they were driving and saw a sign for the town of Gash. Being two cheeky men in their 30s, but with the sense of humor of 11-year-olds (I can TOTALLY relate to that latter part, BTW), they took a selfie with the sign. With that, an idea was born: do a road trip and visit the towns with the rudest, crudest, most adult-sounding names in Great Britain.

In the years since, they kept a Word document and any time they heard about a town or even a street with a funny, adult sort of name, in the newspaper, online, etc., they’d add it to the list.

Once they had enough names, they mapped all the places out and began their road trip. They started in northwest England, with places suck such as Cockermouth and Slackbottom Road in Bradford, Penistone (pronounced ‘PENNIS-tun’) in Yorkshire and Butthole Lane in Leicestershire.

UK3They then worked their way to the south west of England so they could get selfies with signs for Shitterton, Cocking and South Harting — which is abbreviated as S. Harting on the sign.

After heading east, they made their way up the east coast, stopping in places suck such (this was the second time I mistyped “such” as “suck” – Freud much, Sharon?) as Fingringhoe, Feltwell, Fanny Hands Lane — places like that. They also stopped at Wetwang, as well as their final location, Coxhoe.

The places the brothers visited, from north to south, were: Bellenden Gardens, Cumwhinton, Cocklakes Cotehill, Cockermouth, Clithero, Fanny Street, Slack Bottom Road, Upperthong, Penistone, Butthole Lane, Willey, Titty Ho, Bell End, The Knob, Lower Swell, Old Sodbury, Butcombe, Shaftesbury, Shitterton, Sandyballs, Pound Bottom landfill, Cocking, Lickfold, S. Harting, Wilsford Cum Lake, Fingringhoe, Slutshole Lane, Feltwell, Fanny Hands Lane, Scunthorpe, Rimswell, Wetwang, Coxhoe and back to Bellenden Gardens.

All in all, they managed to get pictures with 34 signs of roads, towns or villages. The trip took 4 days and they logged almost 2,000 miles on their car. As far as I’m concerned, it sounds TOTALLY worth it :-).

Hi Bob! Alas, they don’t have their own website about their adventures. I culled the information from several sites that mentioned it.
