Electrical Shocks At A Water Park – Definitely NOT Something You Want To Feel. But People Did.

by SharonKurheg

As per multiple reports, several visitors to Volcano Bay, the water park owned and operated by Universal Orlando Resort, complained of feeling electric currents while on an attraction on Sunday, causing the park to close several hours early that day for investigation.

As per the Orlando Sentinel, multiple customers reported feeling electrical currents, as if they had been “zapped,” while on the Kopiko Wai Winding River. One woman compared the strange sensation to bee stings that started at her knees and moved down to her feet.

It was described as, “…a tingly, prickly current,” as per Sentinel reporter Gabrielle Russon.

The park was closed early and guests and staff who were affected by the situation were attended to by the park’s on-site medical staff.

Four Volcano Bay employees were transported to hospitals “out of an abundance of caution,” said Universal spokesperson Tom Schroder. He also said they, “were all quickly released and are fine and no guests were transported to the hospital” in a statement to the New York Daily News.

OUC (Orlando Utilities Commission – the municipally-owned public utility that provides water and electric service to Central Florida), outside electrical contractors and their own in-house electricians were called to determine the source of the problem, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was also contacted to ensure that, once the problem was resolved, the water park was safe.

The park reopened on Monday with no further issues.

On Wednesday evening, Universal Orlando Resort released the following on their Twitter page:

Volcano Bay opened in 2017 and, to date, Joe and I still haven’t visited it. I think we may hold off a little longer. 😉
