More Reasons To Be Wary About Airbnbs

by SharonKurheg

We’ve suggested that people be cautious about Airbnb for a while now. There’ve just been too many stories about hidden, undisclosed cameras, as well as various other tales about/for potential Airbnb guests and hosts that make us very hesitant about using Airbnb.

Unfortunately, it looks like the posts we’ve done only scratched the surface.

Joe and I have only been in an Airbnb once – it was for one night in 2016, when we were due to fly out of Miami the next morning to fly to Cuba. We traveled with another couple and they made the reservation. Everything went fine in the 12 or so hours that we were actually in the house, but I personally didn’t feel comfortable staying in a stranger’s house. But that’s probably just me.

I didn’t read about the potential issues with Airbnb until a year or two later. It wasn’t something I really looked to read, since I didn’t plan on staying at another Airbnb anyway. But once we started writing YMMV, my interests in learning more about travel stuff, including Airbnb, increased. That’s how/when I discovered the issues with hidden cameras, etc.

And now I’ve found this. Granted, it’s a couple of years old, but based on my readings, some of the issues they’ve mentions may have changed a little, but not much. Certainly not enough to convince me to stay at an Airbnb when hotels are viable options.

As always, Your Mileage May Vary and you may be 100% comfortable in an Airbnb situation. If that’s the case, great for you! All I’m saying is to stay safe, travel friends!
