I Booked My Dad On The EVA Air Hello Kitty Plane And Didn’t Tell Him

by joeheg

Things being what they are, I get a certain level of enjoyment looking back at past travels, even if they weren’t mine.

Besides booking trips for us, I love helping book flights for my dad and his wife. Being retired, they get to take trips that we’re not able to do. For one of these trips, he called me and said the two of them wanted to revisit Southeast Asia. The trip was originally supposed to be to Thailand, with visits to Bangkok and Phuket but the trip soon expanded when they decided to visit Bali and seemingly the rest of Indonesia.

Planning the trip was difficult but I loved every minute of helping them use their miles to visit these exotic locations. I don’t want to do this for a living, so no award booking service here, but for my dad, I made an exception. By far, this was the best award trip I’ve ever planned. I got them from Seattle to Taipei to Bali on EVA Airways using ANA miles. That’s about as direct of a trip from the East Coast to Bali that you’ll find and all they needed to do was get to Seattle (they paid for a non-stop flight on Alaska Airlines, who runs a direct flight between the two cities).

The one thing that tickled me the most was that the flight from Taipei to Bali was on an EVA Airways Hello Kitty plane. I “forgot” to mention this to my dad and his wife 🙂

Now, they might have gotten a clue something was up because I told them the payment for my time would be for them to take pictures of their flights. They were happy to help since I said I’d be writing about their trip because they’d be flying on airlines I’d probably never get to take. Little did they know what was in store.

I give them credit – they were able to get pictures of an empty cabin. Something I’m never able to do. They also snagged two bulkhead seats with legroom for days, which I’m sure my 6’3″ father appreciated.

Next up were the Hello Kitty menus:

And the Hello Kitty-themed food:

I was worried that I might have overplayed my hand. Would they appreciate the level of the Hello Kittyness this plane provides? Then I saw this picture of Joann with the Hello Kitty merch. I guess I did a good job.

I’m not going to give him grief about not getting any pictures of the lavatory.

I’ll admit, this was a bit of payback for years of my dad volunteering me for every single thing we went to when I was a kid. He was the one in the audience, pointing to his child, saying how bad I wanted to be in the circus when I really didn’t.

So parents, remember this. Don’t volunteer your kids for things they don’t want to do or you might end up flying on the Hello Kitty plane to Bali. I really should have thought of a better form of payback instead of an award flight to paradise 🙂

When my wife and I flew one of the Hello Kitty 777-300ER planes last year, it was reverse herringbone 1-2-1 configuration. Have they densified the planes?

I believe their flight was on an A-330, therefore the different layout.

Terrible airline, upgraded to business , not worth it. They even declined my Star Alliance miles. Do not fly Eva Air.
