“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” When these words were published in 1937, Oxford professor J.R.R. Tolkien introduced a brand new world to what would eventually become generations of readers. Whether you’re a fan of the books, the movies or both, if you enjoy of The Hobbit or The Lord of The Rings series, you are going to want to see this – I can almost guarantee it!
Tolkien: Maker of Middle-Earth, is an exhibit that will run from January 25th to May 12th at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. It will assemble “the most extensive public display of original Tolkien material for several generations,” drawing from “the collections of the Tolkien Archive at the Bodleian Library (Oxford), Marquette University Libraries (Milwaukee), the Morgan, and private lenders.”
The exhibit will include family photos and memorabilia, Tolkien’s original illustrations, maps, draft manuscripts, and designs related to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.
Besides the extensive visual exhibit, The Morgan Library & Museum will also host several related programs, including:
- Tuesday through Thursday: 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Friday: 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- $20 Adults
- $13 Seniors (65 and over)

Admission is free on Fridays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Joe and I actually visited the Morgan Library and Museum, a NYC and U.S. Historic Landmark, a few years ago. It was founded in 1906 to house the private library of J. P. Morgan, which included manuscripts and printed books, some of them in rare bindings, as well as his collection of prints and drawings. If you’re into huge book collections or big ol’ opulent houses, it’s a nice place to spend a few hours. But above and beyond that, if you’re a Tolkien fan, you might want to make plans to see this – it’s the only U.S. stop for the exhibit and it’s supposed to be huge. Enjoy!
