One of the most interesting promotions in the world of points and miles is IHG Accelerate. In order to receive you bonus, you need to complete a number of tasks that seem to be somewhat related to your prior history with IHG. For instance, if you only stay at Holiday Inn Express hotels, you may get a task to stay at three different IHG brands. If you have an IHG credit card, you might need to use it to pay for a stay. IMHO, it’s one of the smartest promotions our there. It reinforces your prior activities and rewards you for changing your routine. Brilliant marketing scheme.
The Accelerate promo is also wonderful because it allows you to try to figure out the best way to complete your tasks with the least amount of effort possible. That’s exactly what I did for the current promotion.
If it takes much more effort than this, I’m not going to go out of my way to earn IHG points. I can buy them during a promotion for half a cent each.
Fortunately, my current Accelerate offer was pretty easy to complete.
I had to complete three out of four tasks to get the 25,500 point bonus.
- Stay once
- Use my IHG card to pay for a hotel stay
- Purchase points
- Stay for five nights
I already had a plan stayed at an IHG hotel. I only had to pay with that stay with my IHG Rewards Club credit card and then buy some points to complete this. Easy peasy.
Fortunately, IHG recently launched a flash sale on Rewards Club points, offering them at 50% off the normal price. So for buying highly discounted points, I could finish off my task. Sure, go and twist my arm. Buying points during the flash sale, I completed my third (of four) tasks and received my extra bonus.
So for completing a stay I had already planned, paying with my IHG card and buying discounted points, I received 25,500 extra IHG Rewards club points. At a purchase price of half a cent each, that’s $127.50 in value. I often redeem my IHG points at around 1 cent each so I’d value that bonus at $255. Pretty awesome for not doing all that much work.
Hopefully now that I’ve completed this round of the IHG Accelerate promotion, my tasks won’t be too hard the next time. Who knows? I’ll be waiting for when/if the new list of tasks is released.
